my story

My name is Kendra Marie Olivieri, I’m a 1999 baby, and 15 years ago my love for fashion was born. I’ve never been shy to share my work, but I finally decided it was time to really put myself out there to begin branding myself. So welcome, and thanks for stopping by!

how it all started

Christmas of 2007, my grandma wrapped something very special under the tree: my very first fashion illustration sketch book. After that, fashion design gifts became a regular thing and my passion started to grow.

Few years later, my grandma provided me with the basics of sewing before I moved on to community classes and eventually private sewing lessons at the start of middle school.

beginning my education

In the fall of 2015, my sophomore year of high school I took an eLearning course on the Basics of the Fashion Industry. Unfortunately, that was the only type of course that was offered at my high school, but I was hungry for more and I knew wanted to study fashion when I began college.

I attended Arizona State University beginning Fall 2018 starting out as a Supply Chain Management major… and I hated it! I tried to make myself enjoy my experience better by accepting a job at Nordstrom and adding a Fashion Minor, which did help a little bit.

Then…my entire university experience was transferred to online thanks to the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic. The isolation of the pandemic made me realize that I shouldn’t be pushing my passions aside. So I told no one, and just full sent it: I changed my major completely to Fashion.

at university

When I joined the Fashion program at Arizona State University, it was practically brand new. Thanks to this I was able to study all aspects of the fashion industry.

During my time, I grew an intense interest in the other parts of the industry. Spending time in the business school gave me a decent intro to business overall and helped me understand the business world of fashion.

During the last two years I focused a lot on research to better understand some of the deeper, and sometimes darker, parts of the industry. This is where I found 2 additional passions:

GENDER & SIZE INCLUSIVITY SUSTAINABLE FASHION

Fashion Values

GENDER INCLUSIVITY — It blows my mind that in 2023 the industry continues to limit people being able to reach their full expression of self, having yet to provide wide range of gender inclusive product to the masses. Fashion is a way for people to express themselves and it is for everyone. The gender binary is dangerous to the industry because it is all-consuming. It separates people into simple categories when all these complex factors about personal style and fashion go beyond the two groups of woman or man. Rather than making clothes for consumers, these companies are assigning consumers to clothes.read more of what I have to say HERE

SIZE INCLUSIVITY — When you limit individuals of what they can and cannot wear based on the shape of their body, you prevent them from being able to express themselves. Ultimately shaming people for simply being outside of “standards” that are decades outdated, contributes to negative body image which evidently results in diminished confidence. The need for size inclusivity has been in the spotlight for awhile now, but I believe there is so much more to be done before accomplishing widespread size inclusivity and improving consumers perception of self. — read my research on Positive Body image HERE

SUSTAINABLE FASHION — The fashion industry is the #2 contributing factor to the climate crisis, right behind the oil industry. Fast fashion companies seem desirable to the consumers with low-prices and speedy production, but it’s ultimately costing us our planet. Sustainable fashion has been accomplished by plenty of companies, so clearly it’s not a concept that’s as out of reach some are making it out to be. Producing fashion that is affordable for the average consumer and doesn’t kill our environment is worth reducing profits given that it’s not really going to matter how much money is in a CEO’s pocket if no one’s around. — read more about sustainable fashion HERE
